In the late 1970s, during a period of racial conflict, economic depression, and urban unrest, Hall joined the band that would eventually become The Specials in Coventry, an English city in the Midlands.
The band rose to the top of the music scene thanks to its combination of Black and White members and its Jamaican-inspired look of crisp suits and porkpie hats.
The mournful, ominous “Ghost Town,” which peaked at number one on the U.K. music charts in the summer of 1981 when riots broke out in Britain’s cities, is the band’s most famous song.
Before Hall and bandmates Neville Staple and Lynval Golding departed The Specials in 1981 to form Fun Boy Three, the group scored seven U.K. Top 10 songs.

In gratitude, Hall gave them walk-on roles in his 1997 video “Ballad of a Landlord” and made a special appearance in their music video for “Sunday Morning.”
