Chris Licht, the CEO of CNN, wrote in a statement to employees that Drew’s passing was “a heartbreaking loss to CNN and our whole profession.” The work of Drew, a highly respected investigative journalist, “embodied the objective of this organization in every manner” and “had great influence.” Griffin spent nearly two decades as a member of CNN’s investigative team, working on countless stories and documentaries.
Some of the most prestigious journalism awards, including the Emmys, Peabodys, and Murrows, had recognized his reporting. Coworkers said that Griffin had a remarkable work ethic.
Most of his coworkers were unaware of his sickness, and he continued to report until the day of his death.
In a note to the investigation team on Sunday, Michael Bass, CNN’s Executive Vice President of Programming, also expressed his appreciation for Griffin.
Bass remarked that the author was “fearless and artistic at the same time. He knew how to push a story ahead to its boundaries while also telling it in a way that would make it understandable to everyone.”

Following the CNN report, Uber declared it will end a rule that required those who complained of sexual assault to sign non-disclosure agreements and submit to arbitration.
Griffin collaborated with Patricia DiCarlo for almost ten years as the executive producer of CNN’s investigative team, who praised Griffin as a gifted writer who turned his work into “compelling, must-see TV tales.”

His use of language made him unique. . Griffin started his career as a reporter for WICD-TV in Champaign, Illinois, despite being a native of Chicago. Before joining CNN, Griffin worked for TV stations across Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Washington. His focus on investigative reporting began at KIRO-TV in Seattle, then expanded when he joined CBS 2 News Los Angeles in 1994, helping establish the station’s investigative team.
He is survived by his wife Margot, children Ele Gast, Louis, and Miles.
Griffin was recognized with a Business and Financial Reporting Emmy Award in 2005 for his coverage of a Ford Motor Company car defect that led to fires in some of the vehicles.
In 2006, he won his second Emmy for the CNN Presents documentary How to Rob a Bank. In 2007, he won his third Emmy for the Anderson Cooper 360° piece Hidden Spending, which examined congressional spending.
For the story Crisis at the VA, which exposed the scandals of concealed wait times and deaths at VA facilities across the nation, he was given a Peabody award in 2015.
Trump University Fraud, a documentary on the dishonest business practices at Donald Trump’s real estate school, won him his fourth Emmy in 2017.
